A Sense of Place: Light and Resilience.

I paint in oils to capture the shifting light and resilient beauty of our environment—from the industrial heritage of the North East to the soft horizons of the Cotswolds.

My work explores the deep connection between memory and the landscape, celebrating the earth’s incredible ability to heal and persist. I paint to preserve the presence of the land, catching the atmosphere of a place before the light shifts. These paintings are an invitation to reconnect—to the environment, to our memories, and to the quiet strength found in the world around us.

The River Tyne Project.

I am currently immersed in a long-term project following the River Tyne, investigating the intersection of industrial heritage and environmental resilience. This series is a study of the riverbanks—where the land begins to reclaim its strength through the shifting light and changing seasons. By documenting the resilient beauty of these edges, I am capturing a landscape in a state of quiet, constant evolution. I share monthly research notes and early release sketches from the riverbanks exclusively with the Studio Circle.

Inherited Brushes.

My artistic journey began in childhood, guided by my father, a portrait artist. From him, I inherited not only his oil paints but a belief that art is a vital way to observe the world with feeling. After a career in the design industry, returning to his brushes was a grounding homecoming. Today, I continue his legacy of careful observation, applying it to the expansive, light-filled landscapes that define my current practice.

Education & Background.

My painterly approach is underpinned by a rigorous design foundation. Beginning my studies in Illustration, I went on to earn a First Class Honours degree in Multimedia and Graphic Design from Sunderland University, followed by a Master’s in Multidisciplinary Design Innovation from Northumbria University. This background in innovation and visual communication informs my unique perspective on composition and the atmospheric presence of the land.

While my work is held in private collections across Europe, the United States, and the UK, my heart remains in the North East—documenting the quiet resilience of the landscapes we call home.

My work is an invitation to pause and reconnect—to the enduring strength of our environment, the resonance of memory, and the light that defines a sense of place.
