Description
I painted this original oil piece in the studio, inspired by that brilliant, dramatic moment on the North East coast just as a storm was gathering force.
The essence of the painting is the intense, rolling atmosphere overhead—a vast, turbulent sky of deep bluey-greys. Despite the immense cloud cover, the sun behind me cast a final, brilliant light, creating a stunning reflection on the wet, expansive sand.
I included the small, resilient figures who share an appreciation for the wilder side of the coast: the isolated walkers and small family units who venture out in all weathers. Their presence against the dramatic landscape captures the hardy, enduring spirit of a British coastal day out.
If you love the powerful contrast of dark skies and fleeting sunlight, this painting is my heartfelt response to the majestic and rugged beauty of Longsands just before the storm hits.
